Here are 7 experiences from my first 50 days in Finland that standout to me, each highlighting a different facet of the Finnish way of life and the profound impact this country has had on me.

Arrival Day

Finnish Countryside in November 2023

Landing in Helsinki on a dreary day in November, the landscape that greeted me—a canvas of fog and pine—felt like a mirror to my Nova Scotian roots. To many, this kind of weather is sad and depressing but I found it comforting and familiar, like a piece of home. This eerie familiarity struck a chord as I ventured into the forests of Kirkkonummi, seeking solace in nature. The peace I found there was unlike anything I'd experienced; it was as if the Finnish landscape whispered a welcome, turning a simple walk into a moment of profound connection and realization of a long-held dream.

Kaikki alkoi Suomen Turussa

Turku Finland

Less than 24 hours since arriving in Finland, I found myself in Turku, Finland's oldest city, alongside my friend Niklas. It was an immersion into Finnish culture and history, walking through the city that threads Finland’s past with the present. From exploring Aboa Vetus & Ars Nova to Turun linna and Hämeen Härkätie (Oxen Road of Tavastia), my time in Turku further strengthened my appreciation of Finnish history. The journey continued to Pori for an Olli Halonen concert, a pivotal moment where the song 'Pohjola' resonated deeply with my own sense of northern identity. Meeting Halonen post-concert and sharing the impact of his music bridged my Canadian essence with Finnish soul, highlighting the shared resilience and love for the northern land.

Revontulet

Northern Lights in Lapland

The northern lights, aurora borealis, a dreamlike spectacle, first revealed itself during my flight, a serendipitous prelude to my Finnish adventure. Yet, it was in Rovaniemi, amidst the challenge of fog and clouds, that my resolve was truly tested. Armed with meteorological insight and enveloped in layers against the biting cold, I embarked on a mountain climb that epitomized Sisu. Standing above the clouds, the aurora danced overhead, a surreal and victorious moment that taught me the universal nature of resilience and Finnish determination. I also had the fortune of witnessing the Northern Lights in Southern Finland, near Karkkila, on the 25th of November, 2023. The show, lasting more than three hours, was an unforgettable spectacle of nature. Finding the perfect viewing spot was a challenge that took over an hour, but the effort paid off. Settled in a dark, secluded location, it was just me and the aurora, an awe-inspiring experience that showcased a breathtaking palette of colors from green and red to white and purple.

Northern Lights in Karkkila

When watching Northern Lights I always listen to two special songs, one by a favorite band I have seen live many times; Mannheim Steamroller and their song 'Above the Northern Lights' which is a fitting song. I also always listen to 'Cornfield Chase' from the movie Interstellar. If you ever find yourself under Northern Lights in a cold, remote forest in Finland this song is essential. It fits the mood perfectly and makes you feel like you are one with the aurora.

Ilves Hockey – A True Sense of Belonging

Ilves Hockey Locker Room

My journey with Ilves hockey has been a profound immersion into Finnish sports culture, unveiling a second family among the enthusiasm and camaraderie. It started with the electrifying atmosphere of the games, which soon expanded to include tours of the Ilves locker room, player areas, and the impressive facilities of Nokia Arena, where the essence and proud legacy of the team are unmistakable.

In seisomakatsomo, the dedicated fan section, I became part of the vibrant chants and songs, rituals that affirmed my belonging in this tight-knit community. The thrill of playing in the Nokia Arena before the local Ilves-Tappara match was an experience beyond words. This journey, highlighted by the genuine hospitality and solidarity of the Ilves family, epitomizes Finnish culture. The warmth extended even into the skies; on my flight back to Finland in February, the flight crew recognized me from Ilves, greeting me with such warmth and making me feel welcomed and cherished. This heartfelt reception was a testament to feeling at home. Regularly attending Ilves games and participating in the lively seisomakatsomo Osasto 41 traditions has indeed woven me into the fabric of this proud community. Every day, I wear the keltavihreä colors of Ilves with pride, a symbol of the incredible fanbase and family I'm honored and proud to be part of—a family that exemplifies the best of Finnish hospitality, welcoming those from afar into something truly special.

Attending Alexander Stubb’s presidential inauguration was an unexpected foray into Finnish politics, offering a deeper understanding of the nation, government structure, and how it functions.

The ceremony in Helsinki, marked by respect and joy, was a powerful celebration of democracy. My interaction with the president-elect and the Finnish people during this historic transition highlighted the pride and optimism that define Finland. Additionally, having the opportunity to speak with members of Puolustusvoimat (the Finnish Defence Forces) shed light on the proud and true strength of Finland. The shared responsibility and unwavering dedication to defend this beautiful country, embodying the spirit of cooperation and resilience underscored the honor of having Finland join NATO in 2023, further strengthening the bonds of friendship and mutual respect.

Connecting with the Embassy of Canada

My engagement with the Canadian embassy was a poignant reminder of home, set against the Finnish backdrop. Attending the reception for the Canada-Finland Youth Mobility Agreement was not just a celebration of bilateral ties but a personal reflection on the deep connections that span the vast distance between our countries. It underscored the shared values and mutual respect that Canada and Finland hold, fostering a sense of global community and the promise of enriching experiences for future generations.

Embracing Nature

Sunset on shores of Espoo

The natural landscapes of Finland have offered endless wonder and inspiration. From tranquil forest walks to the stunning auroras, each encounter with nature brought me closer to the essence of Finnish spirit. The peace of Näsijärvi, the adventure of climbing mountains in Lapland, the history of Suomenlinna, the coastal beauty of Espoo, and the towering trees of Pyynikki - these experiences have been a source of consistent happiness and adventure, providing a deep sense of peace and belonging.
